What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an applicant management system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The Express Entry system considers various factors such as Age, Education, Work Experience, English and French language skills, and factors that would support a successful immigration and life in Canada, for potential immigration candidates. The Express Entry system also matches candidates to the most appropriate immigration programs, specifically, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class, as well as various Provincial Nomination programs.

Candidates are matched to the programs automatically, and every month, or on a semi-monthly basis, the top candidates are selected to apply for permanent residency. While it is possible to qualify for more than one program, IRCC will determine which program the candidate will be selected for.

What if I don’t score high enough to be selected?

There are many ways to improve your score in Express Entry. The quickest way to improve your score is to improve your language examination result through IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF. Other ways to improve your Express Entry score are by gaining more years of skilled work experience, or achieving higher education.

It is also possible to improve your score by having a qualifying job offer in Canada, or being selected by a province that will support your immigration to Canada. Provinces have different needs and seek a diverse range of skills.

Is there anything else I should consider?

There are other ways to qualify for economic immigration that may not be through Express Entry.

Many provinces are in need of various types of skills to fulfil vacant occupations or industries specific to their province. Should you have an education background or work experience that a province is seeking out, you may be able to apply directly to a specific provincial nominee program. This stream of immigration has paper-based options and may not be directly through Express Entry. In general, however, applying through Express Entry is quicker than paper-based applications.
